Just in time for fall color sight-seeing around Illinois, the Illinois Office of Tourism has shared a list of some of the state’s most unusual places to stay. From a treehouse 30-feet above-the-ground to a school bus-turned-solar-powered home, to a trip to Middle Earth, adventurers can find some truly unique getaways this autumn.

Southern Illinois

  • Hobbit Style Habitat in Makanda: At Rocky Comfort Cabins, Middle Earth comes to southern Illinois at these whimsical yet well-appointed cabins with a round door, grass roof and a secret trail to Blue Sky Vineyard winery. Formally known as The Cove, this cabin comes with its modern amenities such as hot tub, king-sized bed, and fully-equipped kitchen, all of which you will use after a day of browsing Makanda’s small artist colony, shops and boardwalk.

  • Sleep in School near Carbondale: Visitors can enroll at the Davie School Inn, a schoolhouse built in 1910 converted into a B&B. Each suite offers amenities like a whirlpool and kitchenette while some rooms still have chalkboards on their walls!

  • Field Trip in Golconda: Sleep close to nature in a school bus-turned-solar-powered home nestled in the Shawnee National Forest. This solar-powered school bus sits under open skies complete with a lakefront view and features a full bed, kitchen with two burner stove, sink, and a cozy couch. Golconda is home to one of the country’s most famous marinas located right on the shore of Southern Illinois’ best boating spot – The Ohio River!

  • Born From a Barn in Pomona: Located at the start of a wine trail and tucked into the Shawnee National Forest, The Barn is a spacious, architecturally unique property with plush amenities located on 70 acres. Multiple couples or families can stay within the five-bed, three-bath barn which has been renovated into a stylish 3,100-square-foot home with a long galley kitchen and big yard. The Barn is a great spot for adventure seekers as well as people wanting to relax in nature.

Western Illinois

  • The Ultimate Treehouse in Nauvoo: Spend a night in a 30-foot high nest with surprising amenities, including a queen-size bed, running water, electricity, heat and air conditioning, a half-bath, and an outdoor shower. One of the newest additions to the Ten Acre Treehouse village, the 400-square-foot Captain’s Quarters sleeps four to six and sports a nautical theme. When guests aren’t you aren’t sleeping among the trees, they can be sure to explore Navuvoos historic Mormon roots with horse-drawn wagon tours that guide visitors through more than 30 historic downtown sites.

Eastern Illinois

  • Recycled Bins in Alvin and West Point: Find your bliss at a converted grain bin secluded deep in farm country. Both bins, “The Has Bin” in Alvin (Eastern Illinois) and “The Unique Grain Bin Cottage” in West Point (Western Illinois), offer cozy comforts including sleeping lofts, baths, and even a prepared breakfast.

Chicago

  • Urbane Urban Escape in Chicago: Fans of modern art and architecture will love the Florsheim Mansion, which Chicago magazine calls one of the city’s sexiest homes for its flirty shape, seductive curves, shiny surfaces, and glamorous history. The Art Moderne escape in the Gold Coast is actually two buildings connected by a sleek “bridge kitchen.” Works of art decorate the five bedroom, five bath home as does a Steinway grand piano.
