A viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life is a staple in homes across the world every Christmas season. At the time of the film’s release in 1946 radio was the most popular form of media, and thanks to The Ed Asner Family Center, holiday lovers in Los Angeles can hear their favorite actors do a radio-style reading of It’s A Wonderful Life. This will be The Ed Asner Family Center’s 4th annual reading of the Christmas classic, a fundraiser for the center, which will take place on December 14 at the Garry Marshall Theater. (It will be available on streaming as well.) The event will be hosted by Tom Bergeron and will include the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants, including Tom Kenny, as well as actors Mark Hamill, Ron Funches and Joey King . The staged radio play will include special effects, a band and surprise guest appearances. Previous celebrity participants included Jason Sudeikis, Rosario Dawson, Brendan Fraser, Christina Applegate, and Pete Davidson. Victor Nelli is returning as director and producer, with Cellin Gluck, Karin Beck, and Tom McAndrew producing.
“With the challenges of the pandemic now behind us, we’re introducing an exciting new twist this year. While we will continue streaming to thousands of viewers worldwide, this year’s performance will be a “Live Radio Play,” with all the performers together on stage. I am eternally grateful to the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants and our special guests, including Mark Hamill, Tom Bergeron, and Ron Funches, for coming in and making sure fun is the word for the evening. I also thank the family of Philip Van Doren Stern for allowing us once again to present this incredible story. This film meant so much to my father and me, and I feel that each time we take part in It’s a Wonderful Life, we honor his spirit.” said Matthew Asner, Founder and CEO of The Ed Asner Family Center.
Navah Paskowitz-Asner, Founder and Executive Director of The Ed Asner Family Center, said, “Your support of this incredible event enables The Ed Asner Family Center to carry on with our groundbreaking programming, including transformative initiatives like The Academy and The Dating Spectrum. These programs open doors, build connections, and empower individuals and families to thrive. It’s through the dedication and generosity of supporters like you that we’re able to create meaningful opportunities for growth, understanding, and inclusion. Together, we’re making a lasting difference, and we truly couldn’t achieve this without your commitment and support.”
